The 13th Annual Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Benefit

The 13th Annual Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Benefit - taking place Friday, January 21, 2011 at Hotel Arts - promises to be the biggest and best ever.

Presented again this year by the Canada Safeway Foundation, funds raised at the must-attend event will support a variety of prostate cancer initiatives including research, education and treatment.

And for the first time, Prostate Cancer Canada has stepped up to support the benefit in a substantial way by donating $500,000. These funds will be directed towards the establishment of a prostate tissue bank. Researchers will be using the tissue collected to look for genetic abnormalities in prostate cancer and to see if there is a pattern that can be used in diagnostic and treatment pathways. Prostate screening has led to great improvements in the ability to diagnose prostate cancer and identify those at high risk of developing cancer. Findings from the tissue bank will hopefully provide the ability to select cancers that need aggressive treatment, earlier, while being more conservative in managing the less aggressive cases. This tissue bank will also be made available to researchers from across Canada.

THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT and GLEE Win Big at The 2011 Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored GLBT favorites this year at the 68th Annual Golden Globes. With a night that showcased Hollywood's most talented stars, it was the family drama in the movie "The Kids Are All Right" and the musical high school tribulations in the television show "Glee" that earned some of the top recognition.

"The Kids Are All Right" took home the award for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, and the film's leading star Annette Bening was named winner of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. Co-star Julianne Moore was also nominated in the same category. The story of a lesbian couple, and the consequences they face when their sperm donor re-enters their family life, struck a chord with mainstream audiences and has been applauded by GLBT media.

The TV series "Glee" has been showered with accolades, and the HFPA continued the acknowledgement with three Golden Globes - including both Actor and Actress nods for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Jane Lynch, winning for her portrayal of the ruthless and sarcastic cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, thanked her wife and children. Chris Colfer was visibly moved by his win and overcome with emotion. His character - Kurt Hummel - has become a role model for many gay and lesbian youth. Colfer acknowledged the importance of his role, dedicating his award "most importantly to all the amazing kids that watch our show and the kids that our show celebrates and are constantly told 'no' by people because of who they are....well, screw that, kids."

"Glee" was also given the top prize for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical.

The Red Carpet played host to starlets in fashion forward gowns and leading men in designer suits, all sparkling from the shine of millions of dollars worth of jewellery. Host Ricky Gervais took to the stage with his expected blend of celeb roasting and awkward boundary-pushing jokes, but kept the show moving between the various movie and TV star award presenters.

RE: Removal of reference to sexual orientation in United Nations declaration on arbitrary executions

Dear Minister,

We write to you in reference to recent actions taken by the United Nations General Assembly. As you are surely aware, the General Assembly voted last week to remove a reference to sexual orientation from a resolution that condemns extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions. The deletion of this reference, which has been included in the resolution for the past ten years, is extremely disturbing and dangerous. It eliminates the important recognition of the particular vulnerability faced by sexual minorities around the world at a time when homosexuality is still criminalized in 76 countries and considered a capital offence by 5 of these.

While Egale Canada appreciates that Canada voted against removing the reference in the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, we now call on the Government of Canada to publicly condemn this failure of the international community to protect and uphold the rights and security of sexual minorities. We ardently request that steps be taken promptly and unequivocally to affirm Canada’s commitment to fundamental human rights around the globe and to hold accountable those Member States who failed in their duty to protect the rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation.

OUTLOOKS attends Con-Version 26

Being a person with a great interest in science fiction, it should come as no surprise that I look forward all year to Calgary’s longest running science fiction, fantasy, and horror convention. Con-Version has been around for over a quarter of a century, and each year the convention has become bigger and better.

October 15 through 17, 2010, Con-Version 26 was held at the Quality Inn in northeast Calgary. The venue made for an interesting change of pace from what many come to expect at any convention. By holding the convention within the hotel, the ambience seemed significantly more comfortable and intimate than a convention center or arena. The layout of the convention was slightly confusing at first (different events were held in different rooms on different floors), but everything was easily accessed without any frustrating lineups or other delays.

What really made Con-Version 26 a success was the team of organizers who worked tirelessly throughout the year in planning and preparing for the show. Derek France, a head organizer of Con-Version 26, seemed as excited about the show as the fans that steadily flowed through the doors.

“We’re all volunteers,” Derek stated in reference to the team of organizers behind the show, “Con-Version is a convention put on by the fans for the fans.” Rose Tanchyk, also an organizer, proved she was a big fan of science fiction and fantasy by coming to the convention in costume. Rose was dressed as Xena: Warrior Princess and shared that she had several other costumes at home, such as a Klingon costume of which she was very proud. Once I had the opportunity to see pictures of Rose in the Klingon costume, I can say that she has every reason to be proud.

The events at Con-Version 26 were many, and there truly was something for everyone. A costume contest held on Saturday afternoon brought several costumed guests on to the stage. Many of the costumes were nothing short of amazing, such as an Iron Man (mark 1) costume and Bob from the television series Reboot. Even a gentleman dressed as Futurama’s Zap Brannigan made a hilarious appearance on the stage. Kudos to all the competitors in the costume contest, as the time and attention they put into their costumes was well received and appreciated by me and the rest of the audience.

Several panel discussions occurred over the weekend which provided a variety of topics, such as the portrayal of women in Doctor Who and a panel about steampunk. Perhaps the most notable panel event in my experience at the show was one that taught and discussed how to survive in the event of a zombie outbreak. The instructors covered issues such as proper social behaviours in the event of zombie attack (i.e. whether to leave a person behind in order to ensure one’s own safety), which weapons are effective and which are too cumbersome (i.e. katana blades are actually a bad idea to keep handy while avoiding raiding zombies) and how to case a room or other area for possible escape routes (windows are our friends). The instructors maintained an air of seriousness to the point that I often wondered if they were serious about zombie survival or just playing the part for the sake of the audience.

In addition to the obligatory panels and costume contest, there was also a game room that was open and available to guests non-stop throughout the two and a half days that Con-Version 26 was operating. The game room had at least two occupied tables at any time that I stopped by. The guests played board games such as Dungeons and Dragons, of which I regretfully admit I have no experience or knowledge in. However, the players all seemed to be enjoying themselves and at some points drew in onlookers who stood behind the players to watch.

A movie room was available throughout the entire convention as well, and the projector was playing a different movie at every drop-in I made. There was always someone in the room to kick back and enjoy a show, and it was a great idea to include a room for guests to relax in the convention.

The biggest draw to the show was undoubtedly the celebrity guests. Con-Version 26 brought a stunning collection of stars from Star Trek, including John DeLancie, Robert Picardo, Chase Masterson, Ethan Phillips, and Marina Sirtis. The guests arrived late Friday evening and treated us to a brief but enjoyable Q&A. The following two days, all guests provided autographs and photo opportunities for fans (for a small fee). All the guests seemed very personable and kind and took the time to speak with the fans, which made the experience of Con-Version 26 all the more enjoyable. Other guests, such as The 404s, a terrific comedy troupe that has been a welcomed guest at The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo for several years, and the band Heroincredible, were on hand to provide entertainment.

If I were to pick my favourite event during Con-Version 26, it would be the slave auction. A clever way to earn money for charity, the slave auction was a simple and effective event. Volunteers agreed to donate an hour of their time as “slaves” to bidders (such as retrieving drinks, holding bags, amusing their high bidder with stories, etc). The auction was rather informal, with MC Mark (member of The 404s) acting as auctioneer. Bidders in the audience would simply shout out their bids until a high bidder was declared. Bids ranged from $20 to $200 and about $1250 was raised for charity during the auction. Celebrity guests Chase Masterson and John DeLancie also donated their time for the auction (though neither were present during the auction itself) and brought in $125 and $110 respectively. Oh, and good ol’ Zap Brannigan received a high bid of $30. All in all, the slave auction was a very enjoyable time for slaves and bidders alike, and a favourite of mine as I’m a sucker for a good cause.

The only downside to Con-Version 26 was the fact that it had to end. Conventions for such entertainment genres as science fiction, fantasy and horror (not to mention comic books, television, and movies) are far and few between in Calgary, and so having to say goodbye for a year can be difficult. However, all the fans that supported Con-Version 26 are undoubtedly impatiently waiting for Con-Version 27. Not many details have been released as of yet, but I can share that Virginia Hey (of Farscape fame) has already been secured as a guest for 2011 which is very exciting! If you are interested in attending Con-Version 27, tickets for the entire event are already available at a cost of $50 for the first two-hundred guests. After that point, three-day passes will cost $60. So be sure to get your passes soon!

You have strong knowledge of inventory management procedures and techniques, and know how to ensure proper presentation of displays and merchandise. You are very comfortable dealing with the public, you are known for your passion for customer service and your understanding of
Calgary’s gay market, and of male and fetish fashion. You possess a keen business sense and are sensitive to the reality of a retail store catering to an gay/straight clientele. You also know how to adapt sales strategies to a changing retail environment.

California Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage overturned

On Wednesday August 4, a federal judge in California overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage, saying the voter-approved rule violated the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians.

The decision, issued by Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker in San Francisco, is an initial step in what will likely be a lengthy legal fight over California's Proposition 8, which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

At stake in the trial was whether California's ban on same-sex marriage violated the constitutional rights to equal protection and due process of two gay couples that want to marry.

Calgary Gets It's First Dyke March

Following in the progressive footsteps of cities like New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver- Calgary celebrates queer women and fights to end oppression.

CALGARY, AB – Calgary artists and activists have come together to present the first ever Calgary Dyke March on Sunday, September 4^th at 12:00PM.

Dyke Marches are common place in socially-progressive cities like New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver. The first documented Dyke March took place in Vancouver in 1981, and has since become an important event across the world. The event highlights issues of visibility and equality of queer women, while coming together as a community and celebrating our love and appreciation for the Dyke identity.

This year marks the first year that Calgary will number among the cities that have embraced this tradition and have recognized the importance of this event. Event Director Brianne Langille says, “A Dyke March isn’t a parade, it’s a demonstration. It gives dykes a visibility that is lacking in Calgary. We’re coming together to strengthen a community that requires public understanding to thrive.”

The first ever Calgary Dyke March will take place on September 4^th, 2010 at Noon. The March will begin at Millennium Park on 11th St and 9th Ave SW and end at Century Gardens n 8^th Av and 8^th St SW. A rally will begin the march, including performances by some of Calgary’s best musicians and spoken word artists.

A Statement from Pride Toronto

Pride Toronto has seen many struggles over the past 30 years, and alongside other Pride festivals around the globe, is no stranger to conflict, mixed opinions, and passionate voices. Within our diverse community, there are many perspectives and opinions to be shared and discussed equally. Pride Toronto is tasked with creating a 10-day festival that acknowledges these voices, while simultaneously creating an inviting, inclusive space for participants.

Pride Toronto respects differences - of opinion, nationality, race, creed, and most of all sexuality and gender orientation. We abandon respect and freedom of expression at our peril. Our decision to restrict the use of the words “Israeli Apartheid” was not made easily, independently, or absent of a commitment to respectful expression. Let us be clear, criticism of Israeli government policy is legitimate. However, the atmosphere created by the use of the words “Israeli Apartheid” in the last three years of the Pride Festival are not.

The Board of Pride Toronto listened to members of our community. What we heard overwhelmingly was that the use of the words “Israeli Apartheid” made participants feel unsafe. For that reason we asked members of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) to re-evaluate their approach when participating in Pride activities – that is not only our right as a Board but our obligation. QuAIA is not being banned from this year’s festival. We are restricting the use of words and phrases that can promote a poisonous atmosphere and detract from the goal of celebrating diversity within our community. No Canadian, Queer or Straight, should have to worry about their safety in a public space because of who they are or what they believe. It is regrettable that some former participants of the Parade are choosing not to participate this year but we respect the difficulty of their decision.

The public presence of the festival, particularly the Pride Parade, is a powerful statement that promotes acceptance of our community. The festival is possible in large part because of our partnership with the City of Toronto. Pride Toronto is obliged to respect various city policies, including the anti-discrimination policy. We take the anti-discrimination policy very seriously as this policy also protects the rights of members of our communities against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict evokes passionate disagreement. However, it should not damage the good work of Pride Toronto and it should not divide Canadian communities. Toronto’s Pride Festival is a celebration of tolerance, of difference, and a demonstration that supports the provision of full and equal rights for members of the LGBTTIQQ2SA community. We hope that our participants can accept the differences within our diverse communities, and come together at the Pride Festival to show their support for each other.

Fairy Tales is the largest annual GLBTQ Film festival in Alberta.

the changing Canadian cultural landscape. They present an annual festival of independent films
made by and/or about the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two‐spirited and queer
community called Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival. This important annual event reaches new
audiences looking for challenging and innovative films. Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival has three
main objectives:

• To bring a rich selection of seldom‐seen films to the Calgary and Southern Alberta
audience that—given the limited distribution network—audiences may otherwise not
have a chance to see.
• To support the work of local, national and international filmmakers.
• To create an atmosphere of respect, inclusiveness, tolerance and pride within and
outside, of the GLBTQ community.

Brief History
The Fairy Tales Festival began in 1999, under the umbrella of the Calgary Society of Independent
Filmmakers (CSIF), and was incorporated January 30, 2004, as the Fairytales Presentation
Society. A governance board runs the society with one full‐time paid festival director, volunteers
and contract staff on an as needed basis. Fairytales programming has more than doubled since
1999, growing in length significantly and featuring over 50 works of various genres and lengths,
Q&A’s and panels.

The Stars came out in style for Hollywood's biggest night, as the coveted golden Oscar statuettes were handed out live in LA at the Kodak Theatre. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin shared hosting duties - the first time the show has had dual hosts in over 20 years - as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave accolades to the best the silver screen had to offer this year. Cyndi Lauper headlines Pride Toronto’s 30th anniversary festival

Cyndi Lauper, one of the world’s most recognized Queer icons, comes to Toronto on Saturday, July 3 2010 for a FREE concert in Queen’s Park.

An unwavering advocate for LGBTTIQQ2SA* rights, Cyndi Lauper established herself as a household name with the 1983 single "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", kicking off a long career which includes more than 25 million in record sales and nominations for 13 Grammy awards, 2 Emmy awards, 2 American Music Awards, 7 American Video Awards and 18 MTV awards. Her most recent album "Bring Ya To The Brink" affirmed her international pop diva status, even more so amongst her LGBT fans, who were featured prominently in the music video for her #1 single, "Into The Nightlife".

"It's an honor to always have the genuine affection of the gay community," Cyndi says. "They have never turned their back on me and I will never turn my back on them. We've had a long and enduring love affair."

In 2007, Lauper created the True Colors Tour, bringing together artists like Erasure, The B-52s, the Indigo Girls, Deborah Harry and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts to raise public awareness about issues facing the LGBTTIQQ2SA* communities. A year later, she founded the True Colors Fund to inspire and engage everyone—particularly those in the straight community—to become involved in the advancement of equality.

Most recently, Lauper joined Lady Gaga as a spokesperson for the 2010 MAC Viva Glam Campaign, which was established in 1994 to support people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS around the world.

The Grammy award-winning singer and Emmy award-winning actress is currently working on her newest studio album scheduled for release in June. Lauper is also featured on the new “Celebrity Apprentice” edition on NBC starting March 14 and later this year launches her own reality show.

Lauper's performance during Pride Week will be part of a full program of entertainment and activities in Queen's Park; the newest addition to the ever-expanding Pride Week site which includes eight stages over more than 22 city blocks and an attendance of more than one million. Plans for the new Queen's Park site include a beverage garden and more Pride Week Streetfair exhibitors.

2 Hot 2 Handle, A night with Canadian Video Pioneer Paul Wong

Fairy Tales Presentation Society, Calgary’s annual GLBT film festival, is proud to present an evening with Vancouver-based multimedia artist, Paul Wong on Thursday January 28th at the Glenbow Museum. The evening will include a presentation by Wong, a screening of his recent works, and a look at his new Glenbow installation, 2 Hot 2 Handle.

An award-winning artist and curator since the 1970s, Wong’s work varies from conceptual performances to narratives, meshing video, photography, installation and performance. Wong’s latest exhibit, 2 Hot 2 Handle, was inspired the Glenbow’s existing collection of bronze sculptures and his visit to the 2009 Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo.

Jessica Dollard, Director of Fairy Tales Presentation Society says, “Paul Wong is one of Canada’s most exciting multimedia artist. Fairy Tales is thrilled to partner with Glenbow Museum to celebrate his work. We are planning a number of events in 2010 bringing together Calgary’s GLBTQ community and celebrating the arts.”
Wong has received several awards in his career including the Bell Canada Award in Video Art in 2002 and a Governor General’s Award in 2005. His video installation work has been featured in exhibitions around the world, including an extensive screening at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

2 Hot 2 Handle is on January 28th and will include video screenings of: “Perfect Day,” a self-portrait of the artist indulging in drugs; “EastVan John,” about a man displaced by gentrification; “Sally,” shot at the China Club in Beijing; and the sexually charged “Chelsea Hotel.”

The North American Tour continues the tradition of the 1964 Jerome Robbins TONY Award winning production, following the story of Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. Mr. Robbins won twin TONY awards for his direction and choreography of Broadway’s FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. When FIDDLER ON THE ROOF opened in the United States in 1964, it was a time of change and crumbling traditions in our own country. Perhaps the explanation for its world-wide success in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s was because the play illustrated the universality of such problems as the “generation gap,” youthful dissent, revolutionary doctrine, and the oppression of minorities. Students of the time identified with the rebellious student, Perchik, and strongly related to the breaking of hallowed traditions. Tevye and others of his time struggled with these problems in 1905, and emerged triumphant, offering the hope and promise of reconciliation to a turbulent society. Today, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is as relevant as ever.

Now, in the midst of a new millennia, in a world fraught with anxiety and fear, the one constant humanity can rely on is the strength of family and of its traditions that will ultimately sustain it through its own trials and tribulations. In Memoriam - Purple in our Pride Flag

The subject of youth suicide in the GLBT Community has been a quiet but important voice in our community. Themes of pressure to belong, to be part of a community experience, and to learn what is the "Homo-sensational Experience" --- often one's own -- can be a lot to handle. And often, youth suicide is faceless.

But in December, Montreal lost one of the key members of it's community. With his camera at each and every of Montreal's hottest events, Bobby "Jens Brady" Drake was someone at the epicentre of Montreal's GLBT tourist, events and late-night scene.

And he will be missed by many.

Montreal's next generation shared the knowledge that they were part of something much larger the moment they found themselves tagged in one of Bobby Drake's photo albums on Facebook. From Montreal's best Friday and Saturday events, to the Priape and Fetish Community, the talented drag community of Mado Lamotte, Fierté Montreal Pride and the Just for Laughs Festival; Bobby Drake's Facebook became the place to be seen in Montreal. A"Village A-List" like none other.

Wearing his signature shade of mauve, Bobby put the Purple in our Pride Flags. He will be remembered by all of us who knew him, and missed by us all.

A CHORUS LINE reclaimed its place in the heart of Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre (236 W 45th St) where it opened to rave reviews on October 5, 2006. Elysa Gardner of USA Today calls it “Exhilarating and endearing, it still has a freshness and fervency too seldom seen in contemporary musicals,” while The New York Daily News exclaims “There’s nothing better! The show thrills from the opening number to the glittering finale,” and Jeffrey Lyons of WNBC TV hails it “An American Masterpiece. A show for the ages.” A CHORUS LINE is directed by its original Tony Award winning co-choreographer Bob Avian and is produced by John F. Breglio for Vienna Waits Productions.

A CHORUS LINE recouped its entire $8 million investment after only 157 performances (19 weeks) on Broadway. It broke the theatre’s box office record 7 times in its first 5 months. A CHORUS LINE ended its Broadway run on August 17, 2008 after 18 preview and 759 regular performances. A CHORUS LINE, conceived and originally choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, features a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. For this new production, Baayork Lee re-stages the original choreography.

The original production of A CHORUS LINE opened at the Public Theater’s Newman Theatre on May 21, 1975 and transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre on July 25th, opening there on October 19th of that year. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score and Book, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It ran for nearly 15 years, closing on April 28, 1990 after 6,137 performances. A CHORUS LINE remains the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.

Toronto - Update on recent hate crime murder

Toronto police have now released security camera video of the vehicle they believe was used in the death of 27-year old Christopher Skinner. The footage can be found at

Skinner was on his way home from his sister's birthday party during the early morning hours on October 18. At the intersection of Adelaide Street and Victoria Street, he became involved in an altercation with occupants of a black SUV. He was then beaten by an unknown number of attackers, knocked to the ground and run over by the SUV when the attackers fled the scene. He was taken to hospital but later died.

Police are calling the incident a homicide, and have yet to classify the attack as a "hate crime", but friends of the victim say he was targetted because he was gay. The victim was not know to have a history of violence.

Several witnesses have already come forward, but police say they are still looking to speak with anyone else who may have witnessed the crime and are searching for the driver of the SUV.

Toronto named Host City for WorldPride 2014

Toronto has been named the host city for WorldPride 2014. The announcement was made today in St. Petersburg, Florida at the annual InterPride 2009 Conference. InterPride is the International Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Pride Coordinators.

The presentation of the Toronto bid took place yesterday during a plenary session at the conference, and included the screening of a video filmed for the occasion as well as public addresses by David Whitaker, President of Tourism Toronto, Scott Mullin, VP Government and Community Relations, TD Bank Financial Group and Toronto Police Services LGBT Liaison Officer Constable Thomas Decker. The city of Stockholm was also bidding to host the event.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this opportunity to bring the world to Toronto,” said Mark Singh, past co-chair of the organization and current chair of the WorldPride committee. “In this exceptionally diverse city, the advent of a festival like this is an opportunity to highlight the acceptance of the queer community by Canadians, and to raise awareness of other countries where queers are still discriminated against.”

The first round of voting resulted in 77 for Toronto and 61 for Stockholm. This eliminated Stockholm, however as Toronto needed a two-thirds majority vote to win, a second round of voting took place. The result of the second round was a 78% yes.

WorldPride 2014 aims to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues on an international level through parades, festivals and other cultural activities. The provisional program for the festival includes an opening ceremony with a parade of nations, an international human rights conference, a wall of remembrance in honour of the 45th anniversary of Stonewall, and an exhibition and networking fair. A gathering of all Pride Toronto’s former International Grand Marshals will take place, an AIDS Candlelight vigil will be held, and three parades including a Trans March, a Dyke March and Pride Parade. Cultural events will be scheduled to celebrate Canada Day and the US Independence Day, and a closing ceremony will be held immediately following the Parade.

“All the usual aspects of Toronto’s Pride Week will remain,” said Singh, “such as the Family Pride and FreeZone (an alcohol and drug free environment), and world class entertainment and performers will appear on multiple stages during the festival.”

Pride Toronto’s 2009 festival drew over a million people and brought an economic benefit to the city of over $100m. Now in its 30th year, the festival is recognized as being one of the leading cultural events of its kind in the world and continuously strives to become more inclusive. With a volunteer force in excess of 1000 people, the organization’s profile is evidence of its payoff line ‘You Belong’.

With the WorldPride bid firmly now in its grasp, Pride Toronto has plenty of work ahead. 2010 is its 30th anniversary year, and a variety of new initiatives is planned including the introduction of year-round events, beginning with a Fall program that includes a Halloween Party on Saturday the 31st of October.

Singh says that “planning for WorldPride will begin immediately.”

Pride Toronto is the not-for-profit organization that hosts Pride Week, an annual festival held during the last week of June in downtown Toronto. Pride Toronto exists to celebrate the history, courage, diversity and future of Toronto's LGBTTIQQ2S communities (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning, Two-Spirited) and is one of the leading cultural events of its kind in the world. - Identify as a gay man (18 years of age or older)

- Experience spirituality as an identifiable dynamic in your life

- Are or have been an active baptized and confirmed member of the Anglican Church

- Are willing to engage in two confidentially audio recorded semi-structured interviews

- Are willing to take photographs illustrating in whatever way you choose, your lived
experience(s) of spirituality.

This aim of this research is to explore and then raise awareness of how gay men, with roots in the Anglican Church and tradition, experience spirituality in their lives.

Vancouver Pride Wrap-up!

Vancouver Pride attendance hit a record this year at both the Festival and the Parade. Over 600,000 people enjoyed the parade on the new expanded route and 110,000 celebrated at the Pride festival site and beer garden at Sunset Beach.

OUTLOOKS was at the festival, sharing in the spirit of Pride with all of the attendees.

Our roving correspondent Linda Eckess was on the scene and spoke with a few notables involved with this year's festivities.

Linda caught up with Barb Snelgrove, Vancouver Pride icon and the epitome of volunteerism. For the past 6 years, she has organized Pride's Sunset Beach Music Festival

Eckess: What do you want to see the tourists; the travellers take back with them from Vancouver?

Barb: Well, any travellers to Vancouver take back wonderful memories of probably the most gorgeous place on earth. We have so much to offer at any time of the year but specifically at that time of year. And, of course, this year it was even bigger with the World Police and Fire Games happening at the same time. And the fireworks we have happening over a couple of weeks that coincide with the week of Pride festivities. So there's a lot to see in a city that (cross your fingers) is always very sunny at that time.

Eckess: What's your favourite part of the this year's Pride?

Barb: There's so many little defining moments when it comes to Vancouver's Pride, some of them are things behind the scenes, like walking the parade route first thing in the morning and "feeling the buzz!". And then there's walking onto the Festival Pride Stage and to look out at over tens, literally tens of thousands of faces. And hear and see the excitement of everybody really enjoying themselves.

Linda also spoke with Crema of Crema Productions.

Crema has watched the Vancouver Pride Parade grow from just hundreds of people to this years 500,000. This year, Crema Productions was the hottest ticket; from the Wet&Wild Boat Cruise, to Jetgirl @ Jupiter and Chicklets @ Pulse Nightclub.

Eckess: What was your most favourite moment during Pride?

Crema: My favourite moment was on the Boat Cruise! Seeing old friends I haven't seen in over 20 years. My other favourite moment was watching all the girls with their shirts off, dancing and having a good time!

Eckess: During Pride, what is your mantra?

Crema: My mantra? "Why sleep? You might miss the party! It's Pride!"

OUTLOOKS attends the 29th Annual Toronto Pride Festival in 2009!

Well, another great year at Toronto Pride for OUTLOOKS Magazine has bestowed upon us excitement and an inability to resist attending next years celebrations!

This years theme "CAN'T STOP: WON'T STOP" lingered in the air above the 1.2 million spectators at the annual Pride Parade. According to Pride Toronto, Pride Week draws as much as $100 million to the local economy and generates $18 million in tax revenue for governments. A nice way to stimulate the economy. This is great news and we hope that the years to come will keep the festival growing with pride and events.

Michael Jackson's Star Studded Memorial

The memorial service for Michael Jackson is being held today at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, with a massive number of viewers expected to tune it to this historic event. Many celebrities will be on hand to pay tribute to the King of Pop; including Mariah Carey, John Mayer, Stevie Wonder, Brooke Shields, Magic Johnson, and Jennifer Hudson. Jackson's long time friend, Elizabeth Taylor, was asked to speak but will not be in attendance, as she was quoted as saying that "I cannot guarantee that I would be coherent to say a word."

The extraordinary event will be attended by 17,500 people who obtained tickets through a random lottery. Scalpers posted listings for tickets on eBay and Craigslist, with prices going for thousands of dollars (many of these postings were later removed).

Jackson will reportedly be buried at Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills today, possibly before the public event. No public funeral procession through city streets was scheduled, and it was not known if Jackson's body would appear at the Staples Center, although a casket is in place throughout the memorial.

Jackson passed away on June 25 from cardiac arrest, although rumours are still swirling about the circumstances involving his passing. To view the memorial live, head to http://www.cnn.com/

Not only is it Gay Pride Season allover the world, but in another realm of Monsters, Zombies, Warriors, Warlocks, Spiders, Bears and almost any creature imaginable, The 5th Annual Proudmore US Server Gay Pride Parade breaks its previous record of attendance and excitement!

This years WoW Pride showcased floats sponsored by internal server organizations such as Silvermoon City with 'The Real Houseboys of Silvermoon City" Float; Dykes on Bikes proudly struts the "Go Girl!" Float. Other great floats include "Battlebots", and "Preists with Pompoms" and the "Proudmoore Divas".
